Greywacke Pinot Noir - 2021 (750ml)

The grapes were hand-harvested and chilled overnight prior to hand-sorting. Most of the fruit was then destemmed into open-top fermenters, the majority of which also had a percentage of whole-bunch inclusion. The fruit was left to soak on skins prior to the onset of indigenous yeast fermentation, then plunged daily. After fermentation, the wine was pressed, racked and filled into French oak barriques (30% new).

Imagine a dark chocolate brownie, baked in a wood-fired oven and finished with a dollop of plum compote. Deeply coloured and exhibiting both sweet and savoury aromatics – think pumpernickel, bramble berries and the soft scent of lilac. The palate rivals in complexity, with tamarillo, wild cherry and grilled nectarine flavours, underpinned by dusty tannins and a long, driven finish.

93 points Robert Parker

Layered with red apple blossom, cherry, strawberry, hints of pomegranate molasses and black tea, the 2021 Pinot Noir is floral and pretty on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is all of these things, lingering through the detailed and finessed finish. The silty tannins speak to the Southern Valleys vineyard from which the fruit is sourced. There is density ensconced with the light framework of the wine. Very good! 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Erin Larkin

91 points Vinous

Greywacke's Pinot Noir is ever improving, with the 2021 showing fine fruit and precision. There are interesting aromatic layers from the usual Pinot fruit descriptors to cola nut, cloves and spice. You can expect a richness of fruit while a portion of whole bunches has helped with both the lift and line of this wine. The tannins provide a mouthcoating, lick-your-cheeks sort of texture. - By Rebecca Gibb MW on January 2023
